These are the rules for 2026.
The following are conditions of entry for artists entering the Art Hawkes Bay exhibition.
All artists must abide by these rules in order to qualify entry.
Each artists must complete an official registration form. The artist has responsibility of checking the spelling of everything required. Painting display cards will be typed according to the information and spelling that the artist provides.
Entry requirements:
Every contributing artist must be a member of an eligible art group or club within the Hawkes Bay region.
Sculptors do not need to be a club member.
Special membership must be approved by the Art Hawkes Bay executive.
2. Entries must not have been previously exhibited in any exhibition, art sale, competition or on social media.
3. All works must be original
4. Works must not have been completed under supervision.
5. Entries are limited to three pieces per artist including a sculpture (i.e. if a sculpture is entered the artist may also submit two paintings). Only one sculpture per person.
6. All work must be for sale at the exhibition
7. An entry fee is payable. A fee is charged for each piece submitted. A late fee will apply after the due date for each exhibition. Entry fee is confirmed each year on the registration for and is non-refundable.
8. A commission will be charged on all exhibition sales
9. All paintings must be ready to hang. Unsuitable framing may be rejected during the receiving process. Double or triply (triptych) canvasses must be suitably joined and ready to hang from one point.
10. Each piece must have a swing tag showing which includes: the artist’s name, club they belong to, title of work, category entered, medium used and sale price
11. A high standard of work is required such as ensuring painting edges are neat and clean, either painted or free from marks of paint, frames must be in excellent condition ensuring any repainted frames are up to a high standard. The selector will be looking at these to ensure the exhibition is of a high calibre
12. Sculptors may only enter one piece. Size limitation is 1.5 metres high by 1 metre wide
13. The artist must not showcase work on any social media platform before the opening of the exhibition
Categories
As the artist, you choose the categories to enter each of your art works. The selectors will award winning paintings and sculptures with their decision being final.
The selector has the right to change a painting into another category if they think it would be better suited elsewhere
There are six winning categories which include:
Land, Water, People, Abstract, Art Unlimited and Sculpture with the following guidelines:
* Land – the depiction of natural surroundings
* Water – includes the water in any of its forms e.g. steam, snow, rain etc
* People – includes portraits, crowd scenes, figures in motion or stationary
* Abstract – Art not attempting to portray accurately a visual subject. Instead it uses lines, shapes, colours and/or composition. In this category we also include semi-abstract art which has an easily recognisable subject but the form is stylised
* Art Unlimited – an open category which could include favourite pets, livestock, flowers etc
* Sculpture – the art of making two or three dimensional works that can be representative or abstract. This category includes carved stone, wood, metal, fibre or plastic
Prizes
The winner of each category will receive a sponsor’s prize.
Additional prizes will be awarded to “Best in Exhibition” and “People’s Choice Award”
A further ‘Mystery’ prize will be selected by a sponsor’s
Highly commended certificates will also be awarded.
Entry and Collection Dates
1. Artworks must be delivered to : Arts Inc Heretaunga (Hastings Community Arts Centre), 106 Russell St South, Hastings between 4.30pm – 6pm on the date which is advised to all artists.
2. There can be NO early drop offs of works to the gallery
3. There can be NO late entries as selection process follows immediately after receiving closes at 6pm on the allocated day
4. All artworks remain the property of the artist unless sold
5. Sold items WILL NOT be released until the close of the exhibition on the final day. There are no exceptions
6. Sold and unsold work is to be collected from the venue from 2pm – 4.30pm at the close of the exhibition on the allocated day.
7. The Art Hawkes Bay executive reserves the right to display work on the Art Hawkes Bay website: www.arthawkesbay.co.nz, on our Facebook page or Instagram account, or in printed publicity material. All works are subject to advertising.
8. There will be no sales from our website.
Important
Whilst good care is taken by Art HB Inc. and Arts Inc. Heretaunga, ALL RISKS relating to the artwork remain the sole responsibility of the artist.
Art Hawkes Bay Inc. cannot be held liable for any copyright infringements. The artist indemnifies Art Hawkes Bay Inc. accordingly.
