About Group
Belonging to the Keirunga community provides our members with a comfortable place to meet ( we have a large well lit studio )and to further their individual artistic pursuits. We now have a diverse range of groups on every day during the week, with 2 evening groups on a Tuesday and Thursday. These allow for those working during the day to ‘not miss out’, along with vital companionship, and shared interests.
New members are always welcome. They usually come along to check us out and have a go first. We have our Exhibitions twice a year, and this enables us to showcase the talents of our local artists. Exhibition funds are used towards inspiring our members with workshops and tutorials designed to help with learning, creativity and inspiration, and to build a supportive community for our Artists of all levels.
History of your group
In 1966 Frank Bacon approached the Havelock North borough Council with the idea of turning Keirunga into a Cultural Centre. With interests over many years, for the Arts in many forms by the residents of Keirunga, this was the beginning of the Keirunga Gardens Society. The group was to lease the property from the Council. A wide variety of groups began to use the homestead – Music, Drama, Painting, Pottery, a rock & mineral group, Spinners & Weavers, a Garden Group, Film Society, & floral Art.
The homestead space soon became inadequate with the growing number of groups and members wanting to use it, so the development of more buildings began. The Art Studio was built in 1985. The Keirunga Gardens Arts and Crafts Society continues to provide community facilities for art and learning in all the buildings, including the historic homestead and cottage.
